A recent student revealed the top two mobile carriers that scammers prefer to use. In addition to this, the study identified the two VoIP providers most used by scammers.
BeenVerified, a background check company, assessed data from the past 24 months to come up with the list of carriers scammers use to make their calls. The data collected scam calls from July 2021 to June 2023. The study took a look at 157,703 call complaints that were logged. From these calls, it used its own reverse phone lookup tool to look through the scam calls.
It revealed that non-fixed VoIP numbers were used by scammers 60.59% of the time to make such calls. These scammers also used the networks of wireless carriers 24.11% of the time. Lastly, calls were made via a fixed-line VoIP (8%) and a fixed-line service (7.29%).
In its study, BeenVerified identified that scammers used Onvoy and TextNow as the two top VoIP providers. Meanwhile, they also used AT&T and T-Mobile as the wireless carriers to make the calls.
Apart from the calls, the study discovered that text scams were the preferred method of scammers. As shared by PhoneArena, these texts try to make its recipient panic in fear of getting disconnected from their service provider.
