Yesterday, a hacker named John Binns stepped forward and claimed responsibility for the recent T-Mobile cybersecurity attack. The 21-year-old was able to share apparent evidence on how he was able to hack into customer data stored in an East Wenatchee, Washington data center. Binns also called T-Mobile’s security “awful.”
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert has released a blog post to give an update about the attack and what they are doing to prevent future incidents. Although he could not release too much information on the attack, Sievert shared that “the bad actor leveraged their knowledge of technical systems, along with specialized tools and capabilities, to gain access to our testing environments and then used brute force attacks and other methods to make their way into other IT servers that included customer data. In short, this individual’s intent was to break in and steal data, and they succeeded.”
He also took the time to apologize for the hack.
“Knowing that we failed to prevent this exposure is one of the hardest parts of this event. On behalf of everyone at Team Magenta, I want to say we are truly sorry.”
As a way of preventing future incidents, Sievert revealed that they are already coming up with ways to improve their cybersecurity. They have already forged a long-term partnership with Mandiant and KPMG, a consulting firm.
By partnering with these two firms, they are able to get “additional expertise to take our cybersecurity efforts to the next level.”
