T-Mobile has quietly discontinued its free Proxy by DIGITS service, which allowed users to add an extra phone number for calls and texts without needing a new SIM card. The feature was officially shut down on April 9, 2025, according to customer service representatives.
As noted by PhoneArena, existing users can continue using their proxy numbers but new sign-ups are no longer available.
Proxy by DIGITS was popular among users who wanted to keep their personal numbers private during online transactions or social media interactions. It acted as a virtual spam filter, providing a secondary number for situations where sharing a primary number wasn't ideal. However, the service had limitations—it required an internet connection, didn't support shortcodes, and lacked data capabilities.
The discontinuation may be linked to T-Mobile's introduction of a paid alternative: a second line with talk and text for $10 per month, offered in select markets with discounts and autopay options. This move suggests a shift towards monetizing features that were previously free.
While the response to the shutdown has been relatively muted, possibly indicating limited usage, the loss of a free and convenient privacy tool is a setback for users who valued the flexibility Proxy by DIGITS provided.
T-Mobile has not officially commented on the decision.
