There are many different ways scam callers try to get in touch with you. And thanks to existing practices, network providers are now doing their best to prevent these calls from reaching their customers.
If you’ve ever received a call from a number that started with the first few digits like yours, this may be because you experienced area code spoofing. This happens when a spam caller uses the same area code as you. They do this to make you think it could be someone local or someone you know.
This has been a prevailing problem for many device users in the country. And once a spammer is able to get a hold of you, it could happen again.
Thankfully, Verizon Wireless is currently doing its part to put an end to this once and for all. With the help of their Call Filter app, you now have the option to use a feature called “Neighborhood Filter.” This filter lets you block unknown callers from numbers that share the same area code and the first few digits as your own.
But to help make sure that the numbers of your neighborhood friends get through, you can add them as an exception in the app. Anyone who is already on your contact list may still get to call you. Only the unknown callers will be blocked by the filter and will be redirected to voicemail.
Later on, you can check out these calls and see if there was any legit caller that made a call to you. You can set that particular number to bypass the filter the next time they call you. The app will also let you know which numbers and how many spam calls it was already able to block.
The app is now available for both iOS and Android device users. There is a premium paid version of the app called Call Filter Plus. This version costs $3/month but it will let you specify particular neighborhood numbers that are associated with scam calls. But you can also enjoy the Neighborhood Filter feature on the free version of the app.
