AT&T has agreed to a settlement of a California class-action lawsuit in the amount of $14 million. This is for the 2019 lawsuit for the $1.99 admin fee that it started charging customers. And as a customer, you may be entitled to a payout.
While this amount may sound like a lot of money, it doesn’t really mean the money will be going to one person. First of all, there’s the subject of attorneys’ fees and other legal expenses that will be paid from that Settlement Fund. Then there’s the question of how many customers are entitled to a payout. As PhoneArena reported, you may only get around $15 to $29 from the settlement. But there’s a catch: this is only for California AT&T customers.
If you fit the bill, you will need to make a claim before October 29th. You can visit this website to file a claim.
During the lawsuit, AT&T argued that this administrative fee was “adequately disclosed” on the bills of its customers. While $14 million may sound like a lot of money, there’s potentially more that AT&T could be charged with. But there’s also the chance that the wireless carrier could win the case and not be penalized. And there’s the delay that this case has dragged on. Both the class action plaintiffs and their counsel agree that this settlement is in “everyone’s best interests.”
Unfortunately, AT&T’s admin fee will continue to be billed towards its customers.
