Apple has just rolled out the iOS 11.1.1 software update, which comes with a fix for the autocorrect bug that changes the letter I into an emoji of a question mark inside a box. To get this latest software update, owners of iPhone or iPad devices need only head to Settings, then tap on General, and then choose Software Update.
Apple had formally unveiled iOS 11, the latest iteration of its iOS mobile operating system, back in June earlier this year, during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Then last September, the iPhone maker proceeded to officially deploy the final version of the OS to all Apple device users. After a month, however, the company was compelled to launch the first update (iOS 11.1) in order to introduce protective measures against the WPA2 KRACK flaw. KRACK, which stands for Key Reinstallation Attack, grabbed some headlines less than a couple of months ago after it was discovered by a team of researchers. KRACK put just about very Wi-Fi capable device today, which led to Apple releasing iOS 11.1.
Unfortunately, iOS 11.1 came with its own set of bugs, including a tendency to autocorrect the letter I with a boxed question mark pictogram. To Apple’s credit, it was quick to fully acknowledge the bug, and even went as far as posting a support document on its official website. According to the support document, the bug may be experienced in iPhone units, as well as iPad and even iPod Touch devices that have been updated to iOS 11. Apple had promised to release a patch for the autocorrect bug a few days ago, and even offered a band aid solution in which uses will have to manually add a user text replacement so that the boxed question mark emoji will not be displayed automatically.
According to a post by Emojipedia, the bug happened because the letter I was being appended with the Variation Selector 16, an unseen piece of code that requires that the the preceding character be displayed in emoji format.
Apart from the fix for the autocorrect bug, iOS 11.1.1 also comes with a fix for an issue related to Hey Siri. Apparently, there were earlier reports of the Hey Siri functionality not working, and this latest software update should take care of that.
