The successor to last year’s Android Oreo will no doubt be named after yet another sweet, but for now, the upcoming version is nicknamed as Android P, and rumor has it that this new iteration of Google’s mobile operating system will fully embrace the notched display popularized by the iPhone X, one of the three flagship devices that Apple had debuted a few months ago.
According to a report recently published by Bloomberg this week, Android P will be optimized for mobile devices with displays that employ alternative designs (like the aforementioned notched screen aesthetic). Right now, a number of high profile devices already take full advantage of the notched design -- chief among them is the Apple’s iPhone X and the Essential Phone, both released in the market last year. Huawei, widely considered as the third biggest phone maker in the planet, is also said to be planning to join in on the notched screen party. The cool thing about Android P is that if the rumors are true, it will not only support notched displays, but also other design types, like the multiple screen of ZTE’s recently launched Axon M, or the foldable display of Samsung’s upcoming new Galaxy device. Apart from embracing notched displays, there is also talk that Android P will offer improvements like longer battery life, and almost certainly, an expanded role for Google Assistant.
Modern technology is always undergoing a constant change, and in the world of mobile, things seem to evolve every six months. As of the moment, bezel-less phablets are about to become the new norm (well, at least among high end mobile devices). And while the notched design favored by the iPhone X and the Essential Phone will not likely become an industry standard, Google might be able to attract some new customers if it offers a similar looking design, too. The tech giant’s Android platform is tops among midrange and super budget friendly handsets, but when it comes to the high end market, Apple has a pretty good grip (at least, in America). By playing the notched screen game, Android just might steal some of Apple’s glory.
But this is easier said than done. For all the advancements Google has achieved in each release of a new Android version, the Android mobile users themselves do not get to experience those improvements right away. Compared to iOS, the process of updating to a new Android version is notoriously slow. Still, Google is actively trying to change this, which means that better things yet lie ahead, despite the hurdles.
