The “dark” theme was first introduced in May of 2017; YouTube implemented a simple and clean design for its desktop website, to help some users watch their videos more comfortably. After the enhancement grew in popularity, many viewers requested that it be made available for mobile devices. Luckily, YouTube heard the pleas of their users and finally granted the wish of bringing the dark UI mode for the mobile platform. Although the dark UI mode was first rolled out for iOS devices in March of this year, the feature has been finally released for Android users. XDA developers, a huge software development community of over 6.6 million members, reported that certain Android users have started receiving update notifications that enables the dark mode feature. This is something that Google also officially confirmed.
However, for those of you that are unfamiliar with the dark mode - a device running on iOS or Android have the same features, the theme can also be toggled on or off in the app’s settings menu. The usual white background is replaced with an all black layout for YouTube app, making it possible for viewers to browse and search in a dimer shade, which helps them reduce eye strain while watching videos.
In addition, various studies have shown that the use of dark themes can save battery life; which is critical to the millions of YouTube subscribers who spend several hours watching videos on their mobile devices. The new UI enhancements also bring a variety of benefits to its end users, like adding a more cinematic feel, increase focus on the content instead of its functions, plus it helps bring out the true colors of every clip - giving it a more realistic view.
