After several months of testing and fine tuning, Apple has finally released iOS 8 to the masses.
iOS 8 is the latest version of iOS, Apple's operating system for its mobile and wearable devices. Now released, the iOS 8 brings with it a number of new features that should excite users.
One of the most anticipated features are the interactive notifications. As its name implies, this feature allows users to interact directly with notifications without having launch the app associated with them. For instance, with iOS 8, you can reply immediately to text message notifications without having to go to the Message app. Not only does the feature save you time, but it also allows you to continue doing whatever activity you were busy with before being alerted by the notifications.
Spotlight searches are another new feature -- they collect search results from iTunes, the App Store, Wikipedia, and even websites. And there is also the QuickType keyboard with better, more accurate, and more contextual word suggestions than before.
OIher features include:
Family Sharing, which can be used for sharing purchased apps and content among groups of up to six members
Health app that can be used for fitness tracking and health monitoring
New interactive widgets in the Notification Center
Shazam song recognition software for Siri that is already built-in
Support for third-party keyboards
Extensions for the Safari browser, including sharing to other apps
Third-party support with regards to Touch ID
It should be noted that some of the new features in iOS 8 may require users to have OS X Yosemite on their computers. The update for that will not be available until later this year, so users may have to wait a little while before they can make full use of apps like Continuity and Handoff, two new goodies that allow users to seamlessly sync activities and/or communications on their Mac and iOS-run devices.
iOS 8 is available to Apple devices such as iPhone 4S, iPHone 5, iPhone 5S, iPod touch 5th generation, iPad 2, iPad with Retina display, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad mini with Retina display.
Those who wish to download the updated operating system, they can either connect their iOS-run devices to their computer and upgrade via iTunes, or watch out for an over-the-air update on their iOS handsets by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
