Just a few days after finalizing its acquisition of Mexican wireless carrier Iusacell, AT&T has announced that it will start offering unlimited calls to any phone number in Mexico for $5 per month. Before, the American carrier usually charged $0.01 per minute for calls to any landline or wireless number. AT&T further clarified that the $5 unlimited calls offer is part of the carrier's World Connect Value plan.
Less than a week ago, AT&T had formalized its acquisition of Iusacell for $2.5 billion. With that deal, the American carrier has put itself in a good position to penetrate the rapidly growing Mexican wireless market. Before the buyout, Iusacell covers about 70 percent of the entire 120 million population of Mexico, and now AT&T gets to have access to this number of users.
As for the $5 unlimited calls offer, this will definitely be good news for American users, especially those who regularly make calls to family, relatives, and other contacts in Mexico. By availing of the new offer, they could enjoy significant savings on their monthly international call costs.
Also, the fact that Mexico is considered one of the most frequently dialed countries among AT&T's wireless customers, the $5 unlimited calls offer and the World Connect Value package becomes more and more appealing to international callers based in the United States. Now they can call as much as they want at a lesser cost.
Moreover, AT&T's new unlimited call offer is rather timely, considering that other competitors are already offering similar deals. As a matter of fact, Verizon already has a plan that is structured the same as AT&T's World Connect Value package. Even T-Mobile has a $10 unlimited calling plan to any landline number in Mexico.
Aside from offering $5 unlimited calls to Mexico, AT&T's World Connect Value package also brings customers low-cost international calling from the US to more than 225 countries. The World Connect Value package is open to all of AT&T's wireless postpaid subscribers, including those who have Wireless Home Services.
With AT&T's acquisition of Iusacell, it gets to have the 9.2 million subscribers under the Mexican carrier. More importantly, the American carrier gets to have access to Iusacell's GSM and CDMA network. This would undoubtedly allow AT&T to build a robust wireless network across the US-Mexican border and even start cooking up plans that would offer inexpensive call rates between the two countries. It appears that this latest $5 unlimited calls offer is now a by-product of that AT&T-Iusacell deal.
