Just a few days ago, Verizon Wireless announced that they would be offering a new unlimited data plan. Shortly after, T-Mobile responded by adjusting its unlimited plan so it could keep up with what Verizon was offering. Sprint didn't take too long to join in on the trend by improving the unlimited data plan it was already offering. So where does that leave AT&T?
Earlier today, AT&T announced that they were releasing unlimited data for all its postpaid customers. Prior to this announcement, unlimited data was something the carrier exclusively offered to DirecTV customers. But as a way of keeping up with the other carriers, AT&T announced that they will be offering this for all postpaid customers starting tomorrow, February 17.
Customers who are interested in signing up with AT&T's new Unlimited Plan will be able to enjoy unlimited talk, text and data for only $100 month for the first line. Each succeeding line cost #40 per month. The fourth line is free, which means that the account holder will only pay $180 per month (after two initial months at $220 each).
Under this new plan, individuals may be able to make unlimited calls to Canada and Mexico (from the US) and even send unlimited texts to more than 120 countries. There is also an option to add the Roam North America feature onto the plan for use in Canada and Mexico for calls, texts, and data without incurring roaming charges.
While this may seem like exciting news, there is a bit of a catch. AT&T's unlimited plan does not really offer unlimited everything. After 22GB of data use, the speed gets throttled during periods of network congestion. Video streaming quality is also downgraded automatically, unless the "Stream Saver" feature has been switched off. It also does not include 10GB of mobile hotspot tethering that the other carriers are offering so it is something to consider. But then again, the fourth line is free; which makes it a good option compared to what others are offering.
Since the unlimited data plan will still be released tomorrow, further details have not yet been revealed. We'll have to check back by then to read the fine print. For other AT&T offers, you can browse more plans and phones from AT&T at Wirefly now.
