In light of the devastating earthquake that recently struck Nepal, the big four major wireless carriers in the United States, namely AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless, are getting rid of any long distance call charges made to the country, so that subscribers can contact family and friends affected by the natural calamity that beset the nation.
AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have specifically announced that they will allow all of their subscribers to make calls or send text messages to loved ones based in Nepal completely free of charge as of now until May 16th. As for Verizon Wireless, it is extending its free Nepal calls all throughout the entire month of May. The waived charges for Nepal calls will also be applied retroactively to any calls made or text messages sent on or after April 25th.
Furthermore, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless are not only offering the free Nepal calls and text messages to all of their plan subscribers, but also to all those who are signed up under any prepaid arm or subsidiary belonging to any of the big four US wireless carriers. Thus, the full list of wireless service providers that offer free Nepal calls and texts now includes MetroPCS, GoSmart, Walmart Family Mobile, Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile USA, and GoPhone.
Verizon Wireless, which has its own Verizon Foundation, has announced that it will match all contributions of at least $25 made by all of its employees (up to $1000 for each employee) to the American Red Cross International Response Fund and World Vision from now until May 10th.
On a similar vein, Sprint has also revealed that through its own non-profit Sprint Foundation, it will be matching all donations made by all of its employees to the American Red Cross beginning now until May 16th.
Subscribers can also help via text-to-donate contributions. To do so, they just need to simply send via text message the specific code to the corresponding numbers listed below, and they will be donating an amount of $10, which will be applied to their smartphone bill. 100 percent of the funds will be directed to the charity they nominated.
For iOS users, they can send their contributions to the American Red Cross by way of iTunes, with 100 percent of their donations going directly to the Red Cross's relief efforts.
