T-Mobile, along with CBS Television Stations (a division of CBS Corporation), has recently revealed that it has completed the accelerated repack of WLNY-TV’s 600 MegaHertz spectrum in certain areas in Long Island, as well as in the immediate surrounding area extending into the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs.
A few days ago, WLNY had moved to its new spectrum frequency, and it did so quite comfortably ahead of schedule -- the deadline was supposed to be August of next year, as set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). With its partnership with WLNY, T-Mobile is now placed in a very good position to provide better LTE coverage and capacity for mobile users based in or around the New York City area, through the installation of gear that not only offers full support for LTE, but is also 5G ready.
As pointed out by Neville Ray, the chief technology officer of T-Mobile, the Uncarrier’s crew of engineers are not only rolling out 600 MegaHertz LTE across the United States at record speed, but are also establishing the foundation for an ultra fast 5G network right in the Big Apple, via the deployment of 600 MegaHertz paired with 5G compatible network equipment.
It was back in April of last year when the FCC had held a 600 MegaHertz spectrum auction. Because of this auction, various broadcasters that are employing 600 MegaHertz spectrum will be shifting to new frequencies in order to let wireless service providers gain access to the same spectrum, and then re-utilize it for new and expanded mobile services across America.
Last year had seen T-Mobile announce a number of collaborations with several broadcasting companies, including NBC’s KXAS-TV and FOX TV’s WWOR. The purpose, of course, was to help broadcasters make the transition to new airwaves. The major US wireless carrier’s partnership with CBS Television Stations allows both entities to carry out the speedy deployment of 600 MegaHertz Extended Range LTE, which not only travels double the distance compared to regular LTE, but also functions four times better inside buildings and structures versus midband spectrum. And as mentioned earlier in this post, 600 MegaHertz Extended Range LTE should lay the foundation for a 5G network, right in the concrete jungle where dreams are made of. Some time within the first six months of next year, T-Mobile is looking forward to lighting up this 600 MegaHertz LTE.
