The recent weekend saw cable giant Charter Communications join in on the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) party by launching its new wireless service brand, Spectrum Mobile. Similar to what fellow cable operator Comcast did last year with Xfinity Mobile, Charter took full advantage of the MVNO deal it had signed with Verizon Wireless (the number one mobile carrier in the United States) in order to make its debut in the wireless business.
Availability
Like Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile, Charter’s Spectrum Mobile is made available only to customers of Charter’s cable broadband services.
Unlimited data
Customers can pay $45 every month and get to enjoy unlimited minutes of voice calls, text messaging, and data. They should take note though that the first 20 gigabytes of data will be offered at high speeds, while any gigabyte beyond that will be throttled to an unspecified speed, most likely at 128 kilobits per second (kbps).
By the Gig
Of course, mobile users can also choose to avail of By the Gig, a per gigabyte set up wherein they can get unlimited minutes of voice calls and text messaging, as well as a gigabyte of data, for a price of $14 per month. With this option, every extra whole (or partial) gigabyte of data will cost the customer another $14.
Also, a maximum of four lines of service can be added, free of charge.
Wi-Fi hotspots
Spectrum Mobile allows customers to connect their networks of Wi-Fi hotspots at no charge. On the $45 per month unlimited data plan, hotspot use is throttled to 600 kbps beyond the 5 gigabyte limit. On top of that, all hotspot usage is counted toward the customer’s high speed data cap. As for the per gigabyte option, hotspot usage comes with zero speed limits.
Devices
On Spectrum Mobile, customers are required to buy a new handset, and they are not allowed to bring in their own devices. Right now, Charter’s MVNO only offers five smartphone models, none of which are iPhones:
Extra charges
Spectrum Mobile will be charging an additional monthly fee if a customer decides to terminate their cable broadband service.
