Taiwanese phone maker HTC first introduced the Eye Experience software suite when it unveiled the Desire Eye “selfie” smartphone. Now, users of T-Mobile's HTC One (M8) will be glad to know that the Eye Experience will also be brought to their devices via a new Android 4.4.4 update.
The HTC One (M8) was released pre-loaded with Android 4.4.2 whose user interface was pretty much kept the same with the Android 4.4.4 update. However, the main difference is the newest version is the Eye Experience software features, which should excite users, especially the camera-centric ones. The whole software suite comes with features such as Face Tracking, Face Fusion, Split Capture, among many others.
Face Tracking should prove useful during video conference calls. This nifty feature can detect up to four individual faces, and then display each separately in their own frames. So if multiple users were video chatting on Skype for instance, they would see individual frames for each face, not just one wide frame showing a bunch of faces.
As for Face Fusion, it is a fun way of blending two different faces together. Users can take their own pics, merge them with a friend or loved one, and marvel at the wonderful (or hilarious) results.
The Split Capture feature allows users to simultaneously take a selfie with the front-facing camera and another shot with the rear camera, and then put both images together aside each other in a split-pane view.
As expected, the roll-out for the HTC One (M8)'s Android 4.4.4 update will be done gradually in phases. This means that some users might not be able to download and install the update right away. But they need not worry -- as soon as their devices become eligible for the update, they should be able to see an alert in their notifications bar telling them they can already get the update.
Receiving the update is simple enough. Users just need to tap the update alert mentioned earlier, download the update, then install. When their devices are done installing the update, their handsets would reboot automatically.
Those who want to make sure if their HTC devices are eligible can check under Settings > About phone > Software updates > Check for software updates.
The size of the update is about 256 megabytes. So in order to download it without any snags, a stable WiFi network is recommended.
Aside from the HTC One (M8), other HTC devices that will be getting the Eye Experience software suite includes HTC One (M7), HTC One (E8), HTC One Mini, HTC One Mini 2, HTC One Max, HTC Desire 816, HTC Desire 820, and HTC Butterfly 2.
