Mobile virtual network operator FreedomPop has apparently inked a collaboration with the second biggest wireless carrier in America. This week, the MVNO is launching SIM cards and an LTE mobile hotspot that will work on AT&T’s network. According to FreedomPop, the new SIM card only costs $10 and can be used on any certified GSM handset in order to gain access to AT&T’s LTE network. On top of that, FreedomPop also took the opportunity to unveil an LTE mobile hotspot that is priced at $30 and already comes with 2 gigabytes of free data. Before, FreedomPop had only leased capacity from one other major US wireless carrier, Sprint.
The latest move from FreedomPop sees the operator add yet another milestone to its growing number of accomplishments. What makes the carrier different from most other mobile service providers is its approach that makes use of a freemium business model in attracting customers. It then upsells sign ups into more generous packages or other value added offers, such as extra local numbers for those based in countries outside the United States, or a safety mode that helps mobile users avoid overage fees. Moreover, FreedomPop also offers SIM cards so that users can activate their devices on the MVNO’s network. For those not familiar with FreedomPop’s free wireless plan, it promises 500 megabytes of data, 200 minutes of voice calls, and 500 text messages every month.
The recent months also saw FreedomPop raise over $109 million in financing. And then a month ago, the MVNO managed to launch an online website that sells refurbished or used handsets for mobile users based in the US, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. According to the FreedomPop, it has also struck partnerships with over 200 used handset suppliers across the globe, and has plans to sell over a hundred models from well known phone makers such as Samsung, Apple, and LG.
Some may remember that about a couple of months ago, FreedomPop revealed that it was collaborating with Dish Network in offering mobile services for Mexican customers free of charge. This arrangement has the MVNO handle the operational aspects of the partnership and power the mobile service, while Dish Network will run the distribution, customer service, and local expertise.
After starting to expand its operations this year from the US to other countries such as the UK and Spain, FreedomPop is now looking to launch in eight more markets in Asia, Europe, and Latin America before 2018.
