As a direct response to the possible merger of major wireless carriers T-Mobile and Sprint, FreedomPop has decided to launch a new mobile virtual network operator called Unreal Mobile, according to a report recently published by Android Authority. Although its Unreal Mobile exists as a public beta for now (interested parties will need to request an invite to gain access), FreedomPop is looking to have this MVNO offer unlimited data for a really generous pricing of $15 per month (that is why it is called unreal), with zero contracts involved, on Sprint’s nationwide network.
With Unreal Mobile’s $15 per month unlimited data offering, the mobile user’s monthly charge will already come with access to a VPN (virtual private network) service, encryption protocols built in the plan, and ad blocking services (more on this later). Furthermore, the plan will grant any customer the ability to use his or her Unreal Mobile phone number on any handset, be it smartphone, tablet, or even computer.
As pointed out by Mauricio Sastre, the senior vice president of strategy and carrier relations at FreedomPop, the launch of Unreal Mobile would not have been possible last year, simply because Sprint would have none of it. But things have changed now with the merger deal -- Sprint now has to work to gain regulatory approvals, and in order to achieve that, it will need to prove that competition in the wireless industry will not suffer if it combines with T-Mobile.
According to FreedomPop, its Unreal Mobile MVNO should start offering mobile services this year, most likely in the early part of the summer season. As reported by Android Authority, Stephanie Lewe, the chief executive officer of Unreal Mobile, has stated that the unlimited data on the $15 per month plan will be throttled if a customer exceeds the 2 gigabyte allowance every month. Lewe added, however, that data will be rolling over from one month to the next, and users are free to do the throttling themselves if they want to save high speed data for later use.
With regards to the VPN and ad blocking services, Lewe explained that an Unreal Mobile account management app will help users set their VPN and ad blocking preferences. She further revealed that there will be more than 50 VPN nodes made available.
