Samsung has made it official, while still doing a bit of teasing. The world’s biggest seller of smartphone devices has started to send out invites to its next Unpacked event, which will happening next month on August 23rd at Park Avenue Armory in New York City at 11 AM ET. The invite comes with the text “Do bigger things” which should strongly suggest that the latest addition to its Galaxy Note lineup of phablets, the Galaxy Note 8, will be officially announced a little more than a month from now.
The invite also happens to feature an outline of a smartphone, which sort of looks like Samsung’s current flagship offering, the Galaxy S8, with curved corners and slim top and bottom bezels. Lastly, an outline of a stylus can also be seen, rendered in bright blue color. Everybody knows that Galaxy Note devices come with a stylus, so this should be a dead giveaway.
Regardless of what Samsung might think, many view this upcoming Unpacked event as a sort of significant one for the South Korean phone maker. The whole world may still have fresh memories of its last Galaxy Note offering, the disastrous Galaxy Note 7, and without meaning it, they may be wanting to witness if the follow up to that model will not have the same incendiary problems as the predecessor. As for Samsung, it goes without saying that it might be willing to do anything just to not go through another series of recalls and discontinuation (which really, really hurt).
Still, Samsung might have already started to regain some of the mojo it lost with failure of the Galaxy Note 7. Back in March early this year, the company did really well with the announcement of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, two flagship offerings that have not only wowed the world of mobile, but have also translated to impressive sales numbers for Samsung. More importantly, buyers of the devices have not encountered any similar explosive problems as the Galaxy Note 7, which should go a long way in restoring consumers’ confidence in Samsung’s brand.
As for the August 23 unveiling date, it might not be entirely unexpected. Some may remember that a few days ago, D.J. Koh, the mobile chief of Samsung, had told reporters that a new phablet was indeed making its debut by the later part of August. Analysts had predicted that it was either August 23rd or August 26th, but now that the invites are out, all Samsung fans need to do now is wait.
