Every year’s end, the world’s most popular search engine publishes its annual Year in Search report, which basically shows which topics and stuff Earthlings most often Google in their waking hours. The most searched term is literally a force of nature in itself, Hurricane Irma, which is considered by many as the strongest Atlantic Ocean storm in a dozen years (specifically, since Hurricane Wilma in 2005). As for the next two most searched terms in Google in 2017, iPhone 8 and iPhone X, they serve yet again as proof of the enduring and still massive popularity of Apple’s smartphone. Completing the top five most search terms this year are Matt Lauer and Meghan Markle
Quite obviously, Apple had plenty of reason to celebrate in 2017. For one, the year happens to be the tenth anniversary of the existence of one of the most iconic devices in recent history -- the iPhone. The tech giant then proceeded to launch three new iPhone models, namely the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X. It was the iPhone X that generated the most buzz, and it mainly delivered despite the enormous hype that surrounded it for most of the year, with an almost all screen design and a fancy new Face ID technology that authenticates users’ identities by scanning their faces.
Interestingly, there is a bit of overlap between the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X search terms. The reason for this is that during the first few months of 2017, many had thought that the two devices were one and the same. And certainly not helped by Apple’s ever secretive habits, lots of rumors were thrown around with regards to the possible name, which ranged from iPhone X to iPhone 8 to iPhone 7s. For those wondering why iPhone 8 got a higher ranking than iPhone X in Google’s year end report, this overlap is partly to blame.
For 2017, Google also took the time to group searched terms into distinct categories, which range from Actors to Memes and even Elections. It goes without saying that the Consumer tech category is pretty popular -- as mentioned earlier, iPhone 8 and iPhone X dominate that category, with the other top terms including Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8, and Xbox One X.
To know more about Google’s Year in Search report for 2017, it is certainly a wise decision to head to the search giant’s official blog.
