When HMD Global had secured the licensing agreement to use the Nokia name back in December of 2016, not many were sure that the Finnish phone maker would be able to resurrect the once dominant mobile brand. But it did manage to release a range of new generation Nokia phones that are not only powered by Google’s Android (the most widely used mobile OS in the world), but are impressive midrange (mostly) devices in their own right. While it is true that its new Android running Nokia handsets still have a long way to go before they can stand toe to toe with the Samsungs and Apples of the world, HMD should still be commended for doing fairly well in the ultra competitive world of Android phones.
And it appears that the Finland based mobile manufacturer is looking to generate more momentum. Indeed, HMD Global has just raised another $100 million in funding, which should help grant the company the means to continue producing newer and better future Android Nokia smartphone devices.
With the new round of funding, HMD Global’s valuation is now estimated at over a billion dollars. Apart from using the $100 million to aggressively develop and release mobile device offerings, the company is also looking to take full advantage of the cash infusion in order to significantly expand its existing channel reach, especially in mobile markets where it has already established some presence, as well as in potential new markets.
The first few months of 2018 has seen HMD Global ramp up its efforts to offer as much diversity as possible when it comes to introducing new Android powered Nokia branded phones. For instance, just in time for this year’s Mobile World Congress (held annually in the city of Barcelona in Spain) last February, the phone maker formally unveiled no less than five new Nokia smartphones -- two flagship offerings in the Nokia 8 Sirocco and the Nokia 7 Plus, an upgraded version of the last year’s Nokia 6, the budget friendly Nokia 1, and the 2018 version of the Nokia 8110 classic late 1990s cell phone (that was featured in The Matrix movie).
HMD Global also strategically took Google’s Android One program with arms wide open. For those not familiar with Android One, it is an initiative to provide an unmodified Android experience for entry level smartphones in emerging mobile markets. The Nokia 8 Sirocco, the Nokia 7 Plus, and the 2018 version of the Nokia 6 are all Android One devices.
