According to a report recently released by Counterpoint Technology Market Research, it appears that Huawei has overtaken Apple as the second biggest seller of smartphone devices across the globe, second only to industry leader Samsung. Counterpoint’s latest report points to the two month period from June to July this year, and it seems that Huawei may have surpassed the iPhone maker last month, too.
As explained by Peter Richardson, the research director at Counterpoint, the fact that Huawei has taken the number 2 spot away from a true global brand like Apple is quite an achievement. Also, it is a testament to how well Huawei has fared in the last several years in terms of transitioning from a network infrastructure supplier into a worldwide seller of mobile devices. Richardson was also quick to point out how sound decisions made by Huawei in terms of investing in research and development and manufacturing, combined with aggressive marketing and sales efforts, have truly paid off.
Among the world’s foremost brands of Chinese mobile manufacturers, Huawei is the most well known, but it needs to be constantly vigilant -- other Chinese phone makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo all want what Huawei now enjoys -- the chance to stand toe to toe with the Samsungs and Apples of the world.
The question on everyone’s mind is now -- can Huawei sustain its momentum heading into the final quarter of the year? The Chinese tech giant might have beaten Apple in the June, July, and even August months of this year, but it is worth remembering that Apple will be unveiling three new iPhone devices less than a week from now. When that happens, Apple could very well retake its number 2 spot (and even challenge Samsung for the number 1 spot) in the next couple of quarters.
Still, Huawei should be commended for reaching this far. Its achievement is made more impressive by the fact that unlike Samsung and Apple, Huawei actually does not enjoy that much support from the Big Four carriers in the United States (namely Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint). Among the major mobile operators, only Sprint was selling a Huawei device -- last year’s Honor 8 -- but right now, no Huawei device is even listed on the carrier’s official website.
Now just imagine if Huawei had a solid presence in the American mobile market -- it could be way more competitive globally. According to Counterpoint, Huawei’s dominance is driven by strong sales in its native China and in mobile markets in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. Now if it could only get into the major carriers in the US, things could get really interesting.
