According to a report recently released by Counterpoint, one of Apple’s flagship device offerings last year, the iPhone X, has managed to capture 35 percent of the entire profits of the worldwide smartphone market during the final quarter of last year. And while the total profits of the global mobile industry decreased 1 percent in Q4 2017 compared to that of Q4 2016, the iPhone X did help Apple register a 1 percent year over year improvement during the last three months of 2017.
Apple’s brand has also remained strong in terms of bringing in profits -- of the total smartphone market profits, 86 percent is enjoyed by the company, more than any other mobile brand. Again, the iPhone X was a big contributor to Apple’s impressive numbers -- despite the fact that the model was only made available for a couple of months during the fourth quarter of 2017, the device still managed to grab more than a fifth of the total revenues generated by the entire global mobile market.
Meanwhile, Chinese phone makers are also continuing to gain some momentum entering into 2018. As indicated in Counterpoint’s report, the total profits posted by mobile brands from China hit more than $1.3 billion during the final quarter of last year. Much of the earnings is driven by the usual suspects -- namely Vivo, Oppo, and of course, Huawei, the third biggest phone maker in the world.
Speaking of Huawei, the company has recently shared that its two newest flagships -- the P20 and the P20 Pro -- generated more than $15 million in sales in the first ten seconds of a flash sale. Formally announced about three weeks ago, the high end phablets were officially released in the Chinese mobile market last Thursday.
This latest piece of news should serve as a reminder that Huawei’s brand still draws legions of buyers, even if it is only in the company’s native homeland (which given the country’s ultra competitive smartphone industry, is still quite an achievement). And while it is true that Huawei’s plans in the US mobile market largely remain in limbo (or hopelessly derailed), the phone maker is still in a good position to continue to generate revenues and post profits. During a yearly meeting in the city of Shenzhen, Huawei stated that it plans to renew its focus on its current customer base and existing mobile markets, as opposed to expending more resources on an almost lost cause.
