The biggest wireless carrier in the United States remains the best mobile operator in the country -- at least according to the latest report released by RootMetrics. The Big Red also managed to dominate all six categories, besting the other members of the Big Four of America, namely AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. This marks the seventh straight occasion in which Verizon Wireless has emerged as the top carrier overall. Meanwhile, T-Mobile, which was ranked last by RootMetrics, is claiming that there is seriously something amiss with the report’s methodology.
So which categories did Verizon Wireless dominate? The wireless carrier was ranked best in terms of overall performance, reliability of network, connection speed, data performance, voice call performance, and text messaging performance. RootMetrics’ latest report reflects information for the second half of last year. In the report, Verizon Wireless was able to garner an overall score of 93.9 out of 100. AT&T took the number two spot with a score of 90.5, Sprint got third with a score of 84.7, and T-Mobile took fourth place with a score of 81.2.
As pointed out by RootMetrics, Verizon Wireless is tops because of its efforts to continuously improve the quality of its LTE service. RootMetrics also noted how the Big Red has achieved the most consistency in terms of coverage and reliability of network at the metropolitan, state, and national levels during the final six months of 2016.
Verizon Wireless started deploying its LTE Advanced coverage in the summer of last year, and by using three carrier aggregation, the US mobile operator was able to inject a major boost to its already formidable download speeds. RootMetrics went on to reveal that of the Big Four, only Verizon and T-Mobile have effectively taken full advantage of three carrier aggregation, despite the fact that Sprint has also started its deployment of a similar technology during the second half of 2016. As for AT&T, many industry watchers fully expect the number two wireless carrier in America to also join in on the three carrier aggregation fun in the months to come.
In making its report, RootMetrics conducted 3.7 million tests with the use of off the shelf smartphone devices especially in gaining access to networks day and night while walking and driving. Its crew also drove close to 250,000 miles in order to test the carriers’ coverage on highways, as well as in small towns, counties in rural areas, and of course, metropolitan areas.
