Wait -- what? Yup, you read that headline right -- Samsung is updating its current Galaxy J lineup of midrange smartphone devices by releasing the Galaxy J2 Pro. As mentioned in this post’s title, the Galaxy J2 Pro does not indeed come with any Internet connectivity capabilities -- no Wi-Fi, no 3G, and certainly no 4G LTE. The device is simply a back to basics model aimed for student users (or grandparents) -- it can make or take phone calls, send and receive text messages, and offer a few mobile apps (that do not rely on the information superhighway, it is presumed).
Speaking of basics, here are the notable specifications:
Samsung’s Galaxy J2 Pro handset is made available only in its homeland South Korea for a price of about $185. There is no word yet on whether the device will be released in other international mobile markets.
A big part of what makes smartphone devices so popular these days is the ease in which they allow mobile users to access the world wide web. Whether we are googling something, or checking the latest posts from our favorite Instagram accounts, or listening to our favorite audio tracks, or watching the latest episode from that TV series, it is likely that we are doing so using our smartphones (or tablets), and not our personal computers or laptops.
But there is an argument that people in general could do well to cut down on their Internet time. Of course, it will take more than the release of devices like the Galaxy J2 Pro for that to actually happen, but the device does make sense for those who could use some less Internet distraction. Samsung certainly thinks students and senior citizens qualify. Parents who are concerned about their kid’s too much time on the Internet could also find the Galaxy J2 Pro a good option.
