It very much appears that Google is planning to unveil the follow up to last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL on October 4th. The tech giant seems to have introduced a new marketing campaign, and it has even gone as far as setting up a landing page with the text “Thinking about changing phones? Stay tuned for more on October 4.” Apart from the simple text, the landing page also invites people to provide their email address so as to be notified with regards to any future updates. Also, as reported by MobileSyrup, a billboard appeared in the city of Boston in Massachusetts, with the familiar G logo, October 4 date, and the text “Ask more of your phone.” The event will be happening in the city of San Francisco in California at 9 AM PT.
There has been plenty of speculation circulating in the interwebs recently regarding the successor the Pixel devices that Google had debuted back in 2016. About three weeks ago, noted leaker Evan Blass had posted a tweet saying that Google was going to announce new Pixel models on October 5th. Blass had also pointed out that both the new generation Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL will be fitted with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 836 chip set, which is the same processor that HTC had mentioned in its filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Other rumored specs include squeezable sides (just like the U11 that HTC had debuted back in May earlier this year), an always on display screen (akin to Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8), and an IP68 rating for water proofing and dust resistance. The larger XL version of the new generation Pixel devices in particular is also said to adopt an almost bezel-less front side design. There is also talk that HTC will be the one manufacturing the smaller Pixel 2, while LG will be in charge with building the bigger Pixel XL.
As part of its new advertising campaign, Google has also released a teaser video on its YouTube channel. According to this teaser, the new Pixel will feature enhanced battery efficiency, improved camera specs, self updates, voice recognition, faster processing speed, and increased durability, among many others.
Fans of smartphone technology are sort of getting a real treat this year, especially after going through all that Galaxy Note 7 mess last year. 2017 has already delivered the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 devices, the LG G6 and V30, the HTC U11, the OnePlus 5, the Essential Phone, a cavalcade of new Moto smartphones, a resurrected Nokia lineup of phones, and just recently, three new iPhone devices from Apple (the iPhone X, the iPhone 8, and the iPhone 8 Plus). The new Pixel devices would be a worthy addition to an already pretty good year.
