iPhone owners now have more reason to take good care of their devices. The prices for screen repair services of Apple’s smartphones have risen by twenty bucks. Apparently, the tech giant has chosen to introduce the changes in pricing quietly, but iOS mobile users have since taken to Reddit some time during the weekend to sound the alarm for fellow iPhone owners.
For current owners of iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 models, they better be aware that the cost of replacing the screen of their devices is now at $149 compared to the previous $129. As for those who possess an iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone 7 Plus versions, the original price of $149 has been increased to $169. What about this year’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus devices? Yep, the new $149 and $169 screen repair prices will also apply to both, respectively.
But it bears noting that the new screen repair prices will only apply to iPhone units that are not covered by Apple’s extended AppleCare+ warranty. In other words, if an iPhone owner is paying for the AppleCare+ feature and is within the two year period of eligibility, then the first couple of screen repairs on his handset will only be priced at $29 each, regardless of the model.
There is another twist to the story, however -- it appears that Apple has also decided to raise the cost of AppleCare+, well at least for the bigger Plus editions. For instance, signing up an iPhone 6s Plus, an iPhone 7 Plus, or an iPhone 8 Plus for AppleCare+ now costs $149 (as compared to the previous $129, which remains the same for the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 7, and the iPhone 8, by the way).
As for AppleCare+ for the iPhone X, that will be at $199. Just to be perfectly clear, nobody knows yet just how much it will cost to get screen repairs for the iPhone X (that is, outside the AppleCare+ warranty).
The increase in the pricing of screen repairs will probably not matter much for those buying an iPhone device for the first time. But for those who already own an iPhone, the new prices will feel like a curve ball -- they now have to pay more to fix the damaged screens of their device, and if they do opt to get the extended warranty so as not to deal with the increased pricing, they will still have to pay more for that extended warranty either way.
