One of the things that make smartphone devices so popular is their built in camera. Today’s mobile users may not realize this, but back when handsets first hit the market, phone makers did not put much emphasis in image capturing capabilities. But now that smartphone technology has improved so much, the latest models not only can take pictures, but also record 4K video, show slow motion footage, and achieve those cool bokeh effects (blurred backgrounds behind crystal clear subjects on the foreground).
Of course, having twin main cameras on the rear side have been a massive boost in improving how smartphones shoot photos. It is now a given for any flagship smartphone offering to offer a dual camera configuration on the back. Other phone makers are even taking it a step further by arming their products with triple cameras on the rear (here’s looking at you, Huawei, and soon LG).
Some mobile manufacturers have also started making the most out of what recent artificial intelligence technology can provide. Not surprisingly, Google is one of the best examples of tech companies out there who have taken full advantage of AI, particularly in the HDR+ mode that features prominently in its Pixel 2 smartphone.
One company, however, is aiming to combine the latest in dual camera hardware and the machine learning capabilities of AI, not only to achieve better image capturing capabilities for smartphone devices, but also to allow handsets to see things like human beings do. That company is Lucid, which is co-founded by Adam Rowell and Han Jin.
Lucid had already developed a stereoscopic 3D Fusion technology that was intended to power eye cameras for robots. But three years ago, the company decided to shift its focus on fine tuning its software in order to function on a VR180 camera called the LucidCam. Fast forwarding to this year, the company then struck a collaboration with Red (which specializes in manufacturing top quality cameras for filmmaking purposes) in order to develop an 8K 3D camera. This product is slated to be commercially released before the end of 2018, and should also serve as proof of how Lucid’s 3D software can be scaled up to facilitate dual 4K photography and processing. Red happens to be preparing to launch its Hydrogen One holographic smartphone, and this device will be used as a live 3D monitor when the 8K 3D camera is shooting videos.
Ever a visionary, Lucid wants its 3D Fusion technology to go beyond photography and recording videos. It is also aiming to have its tech play an important role in face unlocking features. Right now, only Apple’s iPhone X can securely scan people’s faces. Lucid is working to have its tech reach that level of reliability in the near future. The company is also looking into how 3D Fusion can be put to good use in the area of motion tracking.
