More than a month ago, Gartner had offered new information that suggested that the total volume of smartphone sales across the globe has decreased during the final quarter of last year. This had marked the first ever year over year decline for the worldwide smartphone market, registering a 5.6 percent dip compared to Q4 2016’s numbers.
This time around, however, the research firm is projecting that the global mobile industry is poised to bounce back this year, and will even likely continue to improve by the end of this decade. According to its projections, the volume of smartphone shipments should increase 1.6 percent this year, and then gain more momentum next year by posting a 5 percent growth. By the time the year 2020 wraps up, the surging popularity of new artificial intelligence driven smartphone features should inspire further improvement in smartphone sales worldwide.
It can be argued that smartphone devices really are getting smarter these days, and artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies have contributed immensely in making that happen. But in terms of hardware and design, some say that handsets have not exactly made a giant leap forward. Perhaps the only clear thing that is trending right now is the presence of the front panel notch, which was first made popular by one of Apple’s flagship device offerings last year, the iPhone X.
As often is the case when Apple introduces something new, its rivals are also likely to follow the tech giant’s lead. The same applies for the front side notch, with other mobile brands like Huawei and Asus already adopting the aesthetic. On top of that, there is also talk that other big names like LG and OnePlus will be joining in on the party.
With regards to mobile device lifetimes, Gartner is projecting that they will experience an increase from last year until 2020. As pointed out by Anshul Gupta, the research director at Gartner, premium handsets will be the most likely to to register an increase in lifetimes in the next few years, mostly because owners of these devices are expected to stick to their phones due to a lack of ground breaking new features ahead.
But Gupta also explained that after 2020, mobile device lifetimes will begin to shrink. This is mainly due to artificial intelligence technology entering its peak years. Now only will AI allow smartphones to become better functionality wise, it will also make people and businesses more trusting of phones, especially those with enhanced (and more secure) biometric and ID verification features.
