Video calling is definitely a fun way to get connected with family and friends. Sure, you can always make a phone call, send a text message, or email -- but nothing beats talking to somebody face to face, even if it is just done through your smartphone's or tablet's display screen.
For iOS users, they already have a video calling service called FaceTime built in the operating system. But for Android users, they will need to make use of another app in order to facilitate video calling.
This brings us to the question: what video calling apps can Android users download in order make video calls?
Most people may have already heard of Google Hangouts. It can be downloaded for free and works on both iOS and Android platforms. This video calling app usually comes pre-installed in most Android smartphones, and works by grabbing the contact information of people in your smartphone's address book or Google account's contacts list.
Not only can users make video calls using the Google Hangouts app, they can also send text messages and conduct video chats (called Hangouts, hence the name of the app). Video chatting can be done one one one, or by groups (with a maximum number of 10 participants).
Another popular Android app that supports video calling is Viber. Like Google Hangouts, Viber can be downloaded for free and is friendly to both iOS and Android operating systems. This app began as just a messaging app that allows users to send messages, photos, stickers, and voice messages, but it has since added video calling to its capabilities.
Video calling via Viber can be done live or through pre-recorded video messages. And although there is no separate video calling option, users can make video calls by choosing the video option when contacting their family or friends.
Other lesser known Android apps that support video calling also include Imo and Glide. Imo is free and compatible with both iOS and Android mobile devices. More notably, Imo employs a simple approach to video calling as well as voice calling and sending messages.
Compared to Viber, Imo offers its users a more direct way of facilitating video calls. Users just need to tap a contact from the main contact list view in order to start a video call. No need for initiating chat conversations, just like in other apps.
As for Glide, it is probably the most unique among Android apps that support video calling. Technically, Glide does not actually do video calling, but more of a "video-mail" type of service. Users record a video (maximum length of 5 minutes) and then send it to their contacts. While it does not facilitate real-time video chat conversations, it does allow users the advantage of viewing and replying to videos at their own time.
