After a rather long wait, Sprint has finally relaunched its prepaid arm Virgin Mobile with an interesting rebranding twist -- Virgin Mobile has now been transformed into a wireless carrier that only sells iPhone devices. Specifically, Virgin Mobile is now offering one full year of unlimited data for $1 to customers who decide to purchase a smartphone from Apple and then port their phone number to the new Inner Circle plan not later than July 31st of this year. The same offer is also being made available to existing Virgin customers who are looking to upgrade to an iPhone. This deal is exclusively offered via the carrier’s official website as well as at Apple’s retail outlets. The pricing of iPhone devices start at $279 for the iPhone SE model, and will go as far as $770 for the iPhone 7 Plus model. When the first year of wireless service is done, the unlimited plan will revert to its standard $50 per month pricing.
No unlimited plan is without its share of caveats, and Virgin Mobile’s has a few that interested parties need to be aware of. First of all, when customers go beyond 23 gigabytes of data in any given month, their connection speeds may be slowed down. And that is not all -- voice call minutes are also capped at 800 minutes each month, while domestic data roaming has a 100 megabyte limit every month. Lastly, video streaming will be limited to at least 480p resolution, music streaming to 500 kbps, and streaming cloud gaming slowed down to 2 mbps.
The relaunch of Virgin Mobile marks a new beginning for one of Sprint’s prepaid subsidiaries. Last month, Marcelo Claure, the chief executive officer of Sprint, had stated that the Virgin relaunch would bring something disruptive to the rest of the competition. Back in May earlier this year, Sprint had managed to gain 180,000 prepaid customers, registering some growth for the first time since a couple of years ago. It was a little more than a year ago when Claure had promised to rebrand the Virgin Mobile business. At that time, the Sprint CEO had stated that the relaunched Virgin brand would offer more value than ever before. He added that the relaunch would happen some time during the second half of last year.
