Nextbit, the startup firm that developed the Robin smartphone, has been acquired by Razer. This latest move by Razer is proof that the company is making an aggressive effort to expand its operations beyond developing hardware and software for gamers. Three months prior, Razer had also completed its acquisition of THX, the familiar audio technology company.
Planning to purchase Nextbit’s Robin smartphone? You may be delighted to know that at Amazon, the device is being offered at only $299, but for a limited time only. Indeed, the ecommerce giant is listing the handset at a generously discounted price from May 4th until May 10th of this year.
As reported by Re/code, Nextbit has revealed that it will no longer be pushing ahead with its plans to build a CDMA version of its Robin smartphone. Moreover, the company has also decided that it will no longer be developing a handset that will function on the networks of major US wireless carriers Verizon Wireless and Sprint.
In 2015, Nextbit generated some buzz when it announced its quest to produce a smartphone that makes full use of the cloud for storage purposes. Launched via Kickstarter, the phone maker was able to get the funding it needed and eventually went on to launch its $399 Robin smartphone. Not bad for a start up company hailing from the city of San Francisco in the Golden State.
Nextbit is a startup company based in the city of San Francisco in California, and it is run by former employees of tech giants such as Google and Taiwanese phone maker HTC. Last year saw the startup introduce its smartphone, the Robin, which holds the distinction of being a handset that is cloud based. In October of 2015, Nextbit had announced that its device was already accepting pre-orders (the pre-order period officially ends next Friday).
Robin, the smartphone from Nextbit, can now be preordered by way of BackerKit. For those not yet familiar with Nextbit’s Robin handset, it is a smartphone that is distinctly cloud based. The smartphone was first launched a month ago by Nextbit via a Kickstarter campaign.
