It looks like the airline industry is asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to make some changes to how 5G networks operate around airports. The petition requests for a permanent change to be made.
The airline officials argued that “these concepts… would appear to not compromise wireless operators’ actual use cases while further assuring aviation safety and providing a workable RF environment against which future radio altimeters can be designed and built.
Verizon Wireless has responded to the comment by saying: “We continue to have positive discussions with the FAA and FCC, and progress is being made. We are encouraged to see the airlines making progress with these issues as well.”
AT&T has not given a comment on this new request.
The new requests may put a dent on the airlines’ future plans for their C-band spectrum deployment. Not to mention, the FCC is also looking at new rules around receivers so that the agency can go after devices.
