Apple has rolled out a new feature that lets iPhone users store a digital version of their US passport in the Wallet app. The digital passport works at TSA security checkpoints in more than 250 airports nationwide, making it easier to verify your identity when flying domestically.
According to Apple, this isn't a replacement for your physical passport—you'll still need the real thing for international trips. But for domestic flights, you can now breeze through security with just your phone or Apple Watch.
Setting it up is straightforward. You'll scan your passport's photo page with your iPhone, which then reads the embedded chip to verify everything's legitimate. After that, you'll take a selfie and complete some facial movements to confirm it's really you. When you reach airport security, just double-click your iPhone's side button (or Home button on older models) to pull up the digital ID, hold your device near the reader, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID. You don't even need to unlock your phone or hand it to anyone.
Privacy-conscious users will appreciate that all passport data stays encrypted on your device. Apple can't see when or where you use your digital ID or what information gets shared. The system only reveals what's necessary for each transaction.
Apple plans to expand where you can use Digital ID beyond airports, including businesses and organizations that need to verify your identity or age—both in person and online. The company first introduced digital driver's licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet back in 2022, and that feature now works in 12 states plus Puerto Rico.
