Bad news for Apple iPad users. It looks like the Apple SIM technology will no longer be available for new cellular data plan activations on iPads.
This technology was introduced by Apple in 2014 as a programmable SIM card so users can have their carrier configure it with their network. This helped eliminate the need to purchase a physical SIM card.
As reported by MacRumors, Apple didn’t make this announcement publicly but made the change on its cellular data support page.
The page says that support for new activations on both the standard and embedded Apple SIM will stop on October 1, 2022. The tech giant suggested that affected users should get in touch with their carrier to know how they can activate cellular data on their device.
When Apple introduced this SIM technology, it was intended to be a temporary measure. The goal was to eventually get rid of SIM cards, which would then introduce a new technology for such devices. And now that Apple did not include a physical SIM tray on the latest iPhone 14, they are likely ready to move on from the use of physical SIMs cards.
