If you're thinking about upgrading to a new iPhone through T-Mobile, there's an important deadline you should know about. Starting March 27, T-Mobile will begin charging a $35 fee on all Apple device purchases—something they've managed to avoid charging until now.
According to The Mobile Report, this Device Connection Charge (or DCC) is being applied to in-store Apple purchases, online orders, and even purchases through the Apple Store app. The fee won't show up immediately at checkout since Apple's system doesn't allow carriers to add charges that way. Instead, you'll see it pop up on your next month's T-Mobile bill, which might catch some customers off guard if they're not expecting it.
Here's the important part: if you're planning to buy an Apple device in the next week, you can still avoid this fee by completing your purchase before March 27. Once the deadline passes, every new iPhone or iPad you activate on T-Mobile will come with this extra charge. For families adding multiple lines or upgrading multiple devices, that $35 fee can add up quickly.
If you really want to dodge the charge, you can purchase an Apple device without connecting it to T-Mobile at the moment of sale. The catch? You'll lose out on any promotional offers and discounts T-Mobile typically includes with purchases, which can be substantial. It's a trade-off that usually isn't worth it.
The only purchases that will remain fee-free are those made through Samsung, Sam's Club, and Costco. For everything else (whether you're buying through T-Mobile directly, Best Buy, or now Apple), expect to pay the $35 activation fee whenever you add or upgrade a device.
This $35 charge has been around since 2022 under the name "Device Connection Charge," but it started years earlier as a store fee. While T-Mobile claims the charge covers the cost of connecting your device to their network, most customers see it as an unnecessary fee that other carriers don't charge the same way. Whatever your perspective, if you're in the market for a new Apple device and want to avoid the extra cost, the clock is ticking.
