It looks like AST SpaceMobile is testing out space-based cellular service for AT&T.
In a press release, the AST SpaceMobile revealed that it has gained new financing from AT&T, Google, and Vodafone. They were able to raise $206.50 million. Since AT&T and Google are new investors, they have made special arrangements with AST.
AT&T’s deal includes purchasing network equipment from AST so that it can support the company’s planned commercial service. The wireless carrier has made a revenue commitment of $20 million.
Meanwhile, Google “agreed to collaborate on product development, testing and implementation plans for SpaceMobile network connectivity on Android and related devices.”
Right now, the technology developed by AST is compatible with off-the-shelf 4G and 5G phones. This is comparable to the service that both T-Mobile and SpaceX are also testing out.
If things go as planned, the service will provide coverage in dead zones that are typically left uncovered by networks based on land.
