A relatively new wireless carrier called LinkUp Mobile has quietly grown to 30,000 subscribers in just four months by taking an unusual approach to selling phone service. Instead of focusing solely on online sales or traditional wireless stores, the company is putting complete phone packages in convenience stores and gas stations across the country.
According to BestMVNO, LinkUp Mobile's parent company SurgePays reported that monthly customer sign-ups more than doubled between April and July 2025, jumping from 10,000 new customers in April to 20,500 in July.
The key to LinkUp Mobile's rapid growth appears to be its "Phone-in-a-Box" program. These ready-to-go packages include everything a customer needs to start wireless service: a smartphone, a SIM card that's already activated, and the first month of service included. The company's executives compare selling these kits to selling everyday items like soda or snacks – customers can grab one off the shelf and walk out with working phone service.
LinkUp Mobile operates on AT&T's network and launched nationwide on April 1, 2025. The standard plan that comes with the phone kits costs $30 per month and includes 12GB of high-speed data plus unlimited calling and texting in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Customers can switch to different plan levels after their first month if needed.
The Phone-in-a-Box concept seems to be catching on quickly. The company's first batch of 2,600 units sold out in less than 30 days, and they're now producing more kits to meet demand. For store owners, these packages create an opportunity for repeat business since customers return monthly to add more service to their phones.
SurgePays, which owns LinkUp Mobile, already operates more than 9,000 retail locations and continues expanding through partnerships with national distributors. The company has shipped over 250,000 SIM cards to customers and retail partners so far.
