Remember when BlackBerry phones were the ultimate status symbol? Those iconic devices with physical keyboards and trackpads that made you look important in every meeting? Well, if you've been missing those days, there's some interesting news on the horizon.
A Chinese company called Zinwa Technologies is bringing back the beloved BlackBerry Classic, but with a major twist – it now runs Android instead of BlackBerry's original operating system. According to Android Authority, this revived device is called the Zinwa Q25 Pro and is available for pre-order at $400.
The company isn't just slapping Android on old hardware and calling it a day. They're completely gutting the inside of decade-old BlackBerry Classic Q20 phones and installing modern components. The new version gets a MediaTek processor, 12GB of memory, and up to 256GB of storage – specs that would have been unthinkable when the original Classic launched.
The nostalgic elements remain intact, though. You still get that signature physical keyboard and the famous trackpad that BlackBerry users swore by. The company has also upgraded the cameras significantly, adding a 50-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera. Plus, they've swapped out the old charging port for a modern USB-C connection and boosted the battery life by 15%.
There are some caveats to consider before jumping on this nostalgia train. The device runs Android 13, but the company hasn't committed to future software updates unless there's enough customer interest. It also doesn't support 5G networks, only 4G LTE.
For DIY enthusiasts, Zinwa offers a $320 kit that lets you transform your own BlackBerry Classic. Both options are available through their online store, with shipping expected to begin by the end of August for early backers.
If this project succeeds, the company hints they might tackle other classic BlackBerry models like the Passport or KeyOne. Whether there's enough demand for revived BlackBerry phones remains to be seen, but for those longing for the days of physical keyboards and that distinctive BlackBerry feel, this might be worth a look.
