There will come a day when Physical SIM cards will be a thing of the past. Although we’re not quite there yet, we’re slowly inching a bit closer to that day.
Following the footsteps of Apple’s iPhone 14 series, Google is working on shifting towards eSIM technology. As reported by 9to5Google, the tech giant could introduce a built-in eSIM conversion tool for its Pixel devices.
The report talks about the specific measures that Google is taking to prepare a dedicated conversion tool, which were found in the recent Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 update. The update to its SIM Manager app contains several references to eSIM conversion.
With this dedicated tool, Google is hoping to simplify how users can convert a physical SIM card to eSIM when setting up a new device. It also applies when transferring eSIM between a Pixel to another device.
If your Pixel device now has the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 update, you’ll find the “Convert to eSIM” option under Network & internet > SIMs > (your carrier) on the Settings app. But as of this writing, this doesn’t trigger a response.
We’ll update this post once this feature is already available.
