Google Fi has silently rolled out its W+ service to its subscribers.
As explained by AndroidAuthority, this is part of Google’s experimental Orion Wi-Fi initiative that it launched in 2020. This allowed cellular carriers to purchase Wi-Fi capacity from public venues. And today, coverage of this service has expanded to more locations.
Google’s W+ service makes use of “select secure, high-quality Wi-Fi networks to improve your mobile data connection.” The W+ hotspot has been deployed in low coverage areas such as airports, malls, and stadiums. Google Fi says that they plan to expand coverage over time.
You’ll know that you’re connected to this network when the network indicator field on your phone is displayed as “W+”. But unlike standard Wi-Fi, you won’t automatically be connected to the hotspot if a saved network is available and near you.
What’s interesting about this is that if you connect to W+, your Google Fi data plan will be affected. The only edge though is that you can stay connected if you’re in an area with low network coverage.
If you are a Google Fi customer with an Android 12-powered Pixel device, you’ll be able to use the W+ service already. You can read more about it here.
