Not a lot of people have heard about Helium Mobile. But those who have, know that it is an industry leader in innovating decentralized wireless (DeWi). And today, the company has unveiled a new $5 no-contract plan that comes with unlimited talk, text, and data. For now, the new plan is currently being rolled out to consumers in Miami.
As reported by Fierce Wireless, Helium Mobile was able to offer this plan since it was able to “figure out how to combine T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network with the people-powered network from Helium. We call this Dynamic Coverage.”
The company has worked out an MVNO arrangement with T-Mobile. When their network isn’t available, it uses T-Mobile’s 5G network.
One thing that makes Helium Mobile a unique company is that its network comes from hotspots that consumers own and operate. Those who have purchased a compatible hotspot get rewarded via cryptocurrency.
Helium revealed that Miami was chosen as the first market to launch its $5/month plan based on what community members voted on. The poll was conducted over on X (previously Twitter) to Miami residents.
Nova Labs Wireless’ (the team behind Helium Network) general manager, Boris Renski, talked about this in a statement:
“Miami is the ideal launching point for Helium Mobile because of the existing vibrant Helium Network and as the home of immense crypto development. It only makes sense that Helium Mobile develops its ground-breaking service in the City of Miami to demonstrate the potential of a people-powered network.”
“We are confident that with the help of our community and starting in Miami that we can build this at scale and expand people-built coverage, allowing us to pass the cost savings on to our subscribers today.”
