For some time now, T-Mobile has been charging customers for its activations as part of its “Assisted Support Charge” fee. This fee initially started at $20 and has eventually increased to $35, the same price that T-Mo’s rivals are charging. One way to go around this fee is to order online and opt to set things up by yourself. Unfortunately, this option will no longer be available for free with T-Mo’s new “Device Connection Charge” fee.
This was earlier reported by The T-Mo Report, who received documents that detail this change. The publication reveals that the new fee will be applied even when you opt to activate a line online. The fee will also be in place if you add a line to an existing plan, bring your own device for activation, and home internet service sign ups.
The only time the fee will not be charged is for SIM or eSIM swaps. There will also be no fees for JUMP! Upgrades, prepaid lines, and product activation after an exchange.
The fees will be imposed starting November 15th for smartphone plans and November 3rd for non-smartphone services including home internet sign ups.
