Tracfone is currently working on a recent security breach it discovered in its system. If you are a customer of any of its brands, you may have received an important customer security message alerting you of the incident. Other customers have encountered an unexplained loss of service linked with the breach.
The wireless operator has also updated the homepage on its website to show the message:
“We were recently made aware of bad actors gaining access to a limited number of customer accounts and, in some cases, fraudulently transferring, or porting out, mobile telephone numbers to other carriers. These bad actors may have had access to your name, address, PIN code, account number, secret question (but not answer) and email address to the extent you provided us with such information.”
The operator has tried to get in touch with all customers affected by the incident. But because there were some port outs, there might be some customers who have not received the message.
If you were among those who were contacted by Tracfone via text message (from number 611611) or email, the operator says that you should immediately take action and change your account PIN. You can do this by going to your My Account app or visiting their website to access Manage Profile. The breach affects customers on other Tracfone-owned brands, such as Straight Talk Wireless, Simple Mobile, Net10 Wireless, Walmart Family Mobile, and Total Wireless.
On the other hand, for customers who have suddenly lost service or are struggling with a number transfer, Tracfone advises you to call customer service at 10800-353-1842.
Tracfone also advises its customers to change passwords associated with their accounts immediately.
Ever since Tracfone discovered the activity, they have enhanced security for their customers. One way they are taking control of things is by sending a text message notification to device users whenever they receive requests for number transfer. The message will include a number for you to call if the request was not made by you. Otherwise, you will have to provide your new carrier a Number Transfer PIN or Port PIN included in a text message in order to complete the transition. Tracfone will not call you to ask for the PIN.
You can read more about their security message here.
