Verizon has signed a deal with Tillman Global Holdings that will bring its Fios fiber internet service to new parts of the country where the carrier doesn't currently offer home broadband. The partnership with Tillman's subsidiary, Eaton Fiber, means more Americans will soon have access to ultra-fast internet speeds without Verizon having to build the infrastructure itself.
Verizon announced today that Eaton Fiber will handle the construction, funding, and maintenance of the new fiber networks while Verizon focuses on selling the service and supporting customers. This arrangement lets Verizon expand its footprint faster than traditional buildouts, reaching homes outside its existing Fios markets and the areas covered by its pending Frontier acquisition.
The deal gives Verizon exclusive rights to sell residential fiber services over these new networks during the construction phase and for an additional period afterward. For consumers, this means another potential option for home internet in areas that may currently have limited high-speed choices.
Verizon Consumer CEO Sowmyanarayan Sampath emphasized that fiber is central to the company's strategy of combining wireless and home internet services under one provider, which typically comes with bundle discounts for customers who sign up for both.
