Android phone users in several countries have suddenly lost access to modern texting features, forcing them back to basic SMS messages that feel like a step backward in time. The issue affects Rich Communication Services (RCS) - the technology that brings iPhone-like features to Android texting, including read receipts, typing indicators, and high-quality photo sharing.
According to Android Authority, users in Kenya, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and parts of East Africa have been unable to use RCS since early August, with Google Messages showing "carrier not supported" errors instead of the enhanced messaging features they previously enjoyed.
The problem appears to stem from Google withdrawing its behind-the-scenes support system called Jibe, which powered RCS in regions where phone carriers didn't offer it themselves. Now those carriers are supposed to step up and provide RCS on their own, but many haven't done so yet - leaving users stuck with outdated messaging.
This creates a frustrating situation where texting feels primitive again. Instead of seeing when someone reads your message or sharing crisp photos, users are back to wondering if their texts went through and dealing with blurry, compressed images. For people who relied on these features for business or staying connected with family, it's a significant downgrade.
The timing is particularly unfortunate since RCS was gaining momentum globally, with even Apple agreeing to support it on iPhones. But in regions where SMS still costs money, phone companies might prefer keeping those revenue streams rather than offering free RCS messaging that competes with their paid services.
Google hasn't officially announced the change, leaving users to discover the missing features on their own and wonder when - or if - they'll return.
