According to a report recently published by CNBC, it is quite possible that Apple will be formally announcing its upcoming new iPhone devices -- namely the iPhone 8, the iPhone 7S, and the iPhone 7S Plus -- along with the Apple Watch 3 during its usual iPhone event next month. CNBC’s report also mentioned that the Apple Watch 3 will feature cellular connectivity, which should be good news for iOS mobile users who are looking forward to owning an Apple wearable device that can make or take phone calls, send and receive text messages, and even stream music without having to depend on a nearby iPhone device.
There has been considerable excitement brewing with regards to an upcoming Apple Watch model that comes with cellular connectivity. About a week ago, it was reported that the Apple Watch with LTE model will be sold by the four major wireless carriers in the United States (Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint).
Even noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities is confident that a cellular Apple Watch is indeed coming this year. As reported by 9to5Mac, Kuo believes that the new Apple Watch will be shipping a few months from now in both LTE and non-LTE editions. He further predicted that the new Apple Watch offering will feature any significant changes in terms of design, and that the wearable device will ship in the usual 38 millimeter and 42 millimeter versions.
Adding to the buzz is the news (courtesy again of CNBC) that Aetna, the health insurance company, is now initiating discussions with the iPhone maker in order to offer a free or discounted Apple Watch as a perk to all qualified customers. As of this time, there are no definite details yet with regards to the deal, but it bears noting that Aetna currently covers 23 million customers, which would suggest that a lot of people will be getting a free or discounted Apple Watch soon. Aetna is looking to start giving these Apple Watch units by early next year.
All existing Apple Watch models right now still work as kind of an extension of the iPhone -- the wearable device can only have access to new data when tethered to an Apple smartphone, and only when the iPhone is nearby. This is made possible through Bluetooth technology, with the Apple Watch able to retrieve information from maps and iTunes, relay texts and app notifications and alerts, and even display calendar notices, just to name a few. Even though select versions of the Apple Watch have GPS, the device is still mainly dependent on the iPhone. That could change this year, and by 2018, iOS mobile users could start experiencing for themselves what it is like to use a cellular Apple Watch.
