Around a year ago, HMD Global, the Finland based phone maker that got the rights to make use of the Nokia brand name, had debuted the Nokia 6 in the Chinese mobile market. The Nokia 6 happens to hold the distinction of being the first ever Android powered smartphone offering from the once dominant mobile brand, and sort of represents HMD’s hopes of bringing Nokia devices back to the mainstream.
This year, HMD has taken the opportunity to release an upgraded version of the Nokia 6. In terms of physical design, this next generation model mostly retains the aluminum frame structure, but incorporates new colors on the angled edges -- for instance, the white colored variant features rose gold highlights on its chamfer, while the black colored option comes with copper lined sides.
The highlights even make their way to the vertical camera bump on the center, which makes for a cool look. Lastly, HMD has chosen to do away with the capacitive buttons underneath the 5.5 inch full HD IPS display screen, and transplant and transform the previous rectangular fingerprint scanner into a circular shaped reader on the rear side.
Not content with updating the aesthetics, HMD has also boosted the device’s specifications -- the second generation Nokia 6 now sports Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 chip set, which is certainly an improvement over the previous generation’s Snapdragon 430 processor. The Snapdragon 630 is also the same chip found on Motorola’s Moto X4, HTC’s U11 Life, and Asus’ ZenFone 4. The new chip is aided by an LPDDR4 RAM that comes preloaded with Google’s Android 7.1.1 Nougat mobile operating system, and due for an Android 8.0 Oreo update soon. On top of all that, the latest Nokia 6 now has a USB-C plug, as opposed to the micro USB type featured on the previous generation model.
There are no changes to the camera specs, with the second gen Nokia 6 offering a 16 megapixel main camera (with an aperture of f/2.0) on the rear side and an 8 megapixel selfie shooter (f/2.0 aperture) on the front side. Other notable specs include the 3,000 mAh battery, LTE Cat 4 radio, twin slots for SIM cards, and support for memory expansion by way of a micro SD card slot.
