It appears to be so, at least according to new information presented through a report recently released by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). In completing its latest survey, what the research group did was ask 500 iOS mobile users based in the United States, particularly those who have purchased an iPhone, an iPad, or a Mac in 2018 (specifically in the period between January 1st until March 31st).
CIRP found that last year’s iPhone 8 captured 23 percent of the total sales of iPhone devices during the first three months of the year, while the iPhone 8 Plus enjoyed a 21 percent share. But wait -- what about the iPhone X? Well, the model that commemorated the ten year existence of the original iPhone managed only a 16 percent share. Moreover, that percentage has decreased from the 20 percent share that was posted during the final quarter of 2017.
Moreover, the results of CIRP’s newest survey show that while the iPhone X’s sales saw a drop from Q4 2017 to Q1 2018, the sales numbers of the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus models actually have shown some improvement. Still, one can argue that a sample size of just 500 Apple users might not be enough to paint an adequate picture of which iPhone versions are performing better than others sales wise.
CIRP’s recent survey result might not be kind to the iPhone X, but industry watchers and tech enthusiasts may all agree that the release of the smartphone is such a significant one in the world of mobile. The Face ID technology that came with the flagship practically challenged every other phone maker to up their facial recognition and biometric authentication game. More than that, the iPhone X seemed to have married just the right combination of features, which include Animoji, wireless charging capabilities, an all screen organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, and a front side notch (which has since inspired other phone brands).
But it can not be denied that the iPhone X’s rather steep pricing may have affected consumers’ buyer habits. At a price of a thousand bucks, the device is easily the most expensive iPhone offering ever in Apple’s history. In its first few months of release, it was natural for the iPhone X to produce impressive sales figures (like any iPhone model would), but with regards to whether it can sustain that level, many expect that the high price will at some point take its toll.
