Recently, there have been reports of Mint Mobile customers experiencing security issues. The customers turned to Reddit to express their concerns of being a SIM swap attack victim.
There have been at least a couple of reports from SIM swap victims. But it’s possible that there are other victims, especially since Mint Mobile’s co-founder, Rizwan Kassim, has acknowledged the issue and posted his message to Reddit too.
His message reads:
“We’ve been reading your inquiries about the recent security concerns. Despite deeply wanting to respond to your questions, we haven’t been able to due to some pretty rigid compliance regulations around what we can share publicly, especially while we engage with law enforcement.
So what happened? We can’t share much, but in short, Mint Mobile was the victim of a social engineering incident last month that impacted a small number of subscribers. We have been in contact with impacted subscribers and quickly restored their services. We also continue to investigate this incident.”
Apart from the recent SIM swap incident, there was another issue that several subscribers encountered last month. Many of the T-Mobile MVNO’s subscribers received unexpected password reset notifications. It is unsure whether this is related to the recent SIM swapping issue.
For some, this security attack doesn’t really come as a surprise. In fact, there have been several Mint subscribers who have talked about this security issue since the last two years. And to add to that, many have been asking Mint to implement a two-factor authentication process or secure PINs for porting numbers.
Hopefully, this security issue will convince Mint to finally step up and do its part in protecting its customers.
