According to new data compiled by apps analytics firm App Annie, it appears that mobile users based in the United States spend most of their time on smartphones on Instagram and Facebook. App Annie's most recent analysis, however, suggests that apart from the extensive use of Instagram and Facebook in the US, smartphone sessions of most mobile users around the world are spent on messaging apps.
App Annie collected its data from smartphone sessions on the Android mobile operating system during the first quarter of 2015. Having said that, its data may not fully represent the most accurate portrait of overall app usage in the country, considering that it is mostly only based on the Android platform. Still, the Android app ecosystem is the most expansive in the mobile world today, and even if App Annie is only basing its data on Android users, it can still offer some useful insights into current smartphone trends.
And adding the fact that App Annie just recently bought mobile measurement firm Mobidia only a week ago, the apps analytics firm should have a more comprehensive dataset in which to collect raw information. As a matter of fact, by acquiring Mobidia, App Annie now has broadened its reach to millions of users across 60 countries around the world.
For this latest set of new data, App Annie (with Mobidia's data) examined app usage in countries like the US, United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, and Japan. As many may have expected, the smartphone sessions of mobile users in these regions are mostly spent on Communication and Social categories (40 percent of all smartphone sessions).
As mentioned earlier, US mobile users spend more time on Social categories, especially on Instagram and Facebook. To illustrate further, Facebook comprise the most smartphone sessions in the US. As for the most time spent on apps, both Instagram and Facebook take the cake.
In the UK, Germany, South Korea, and Japan, the dominant category is Communication, which are largely comprised of messaging apps. Thus, most the of the smartphone sessions in these regions are spent on apps like WhatsApp, LINE, and KakaoTalk, just to name a few.
App Annie's data seem to suggest that Americans are more into communicating with several people all at once (which social media apps like Instagram and Facebook makes possible). But in other countries, mobile users appear to more into one on one communication, conducted primarily via messaging apps.
